AI Ethics in Product Decisions: A Practical Framework

As AI becomes more prevalent in products, the ethical implications of our decisions become more significant. Product managers are uniquely positioned—and responsible—for ensuring AI is used ethically.
The Ethical Framework
Every AI feature should be evaluated through four lenses:
Fairness: Does the AI treat all users equitably? Are there biases in the training data that could lead to discriminatory outcomes?
Transparency: Do users understand when they're interacting with AI? Can they understand why the AI made a particular decision?
Privacy: What data is being collected? How is it being used? Do users have control over their data?
Accountability: Who is responsible when the AI makes a mistake? How are errors detected and corrected?
Implementing Ethical AI
Ethics shouldn't be an afterthought. Build ethical considerations into your product development process from the start. Include diverse perspectives in your team. Test for bias regularly. And be prepared to say no to features that don't meet your ethical standards.
